Turkiye Film Heritage Goes Online

The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism has launched a new website, Filmmirasim, which provides access to a wide range of Turkish films from the early 20th century to the present day.

The website currently features 977 films, which are organized into six categories:

  • 1895-1918

  • 1918-1938

  • 1938-1950

  • 1950-1960

  • 1960-Present

  • Other

The films on the website include documentaries, newsreels, feature films, and short films. They offer a glimpse into Turkish history, culture, and society.

For example, the website features a documentary about the occupation of Istanbul during World War I, a newsreel about the Turkish War of Independence, and a feature film about the life of Atatürk.

The films on the website have been restored and digitized by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. They are available for free to anyone with an internet connection.

The launch of Filmmirasim is a significant step in preserving Turkiye’s film heritage. It makes these films accessible to a wider audience and helps to ensure that they will be preserved for future generations.

About Filmmirasim: Turkiye Film Heritage

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism digitizes and restores the films in the archive created by the General Directorate of Cinema to preserve for future generations historical films that serve as important visual records of the country’s cultural heritage.

Nitrate-based films have been digitized by the Professor Sami Şekeroğlu Cinema and Television Center of the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.

The information and commentary on the films on this site were provided by Atatürk High Institution of Culture, Language and History; The Turkish Historical Society; The Turkish Language Association and the Directorate General of Cinema.

Film Donations

They welcome donations of 35- and 16-mm films to help preserve Türkiye’s cultural heritage for future generations.

All donated films will be securely stored in an appropriate environment under suitable conditions, and donors will be provided with a high-quality digital copy of any film they donate.

Film Requests

Use of the images and films on this site is subject to the conditions laid out in the “Periodic Use Directive” of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

You can submit your film requests by clicking on the “Film Request” button under the relevant film.

The images and films on this site may not be used for commercial purposes or otherwise distributed, rented, reproduced, or altered without permission from the Directorate General of Cinema. Excerpts may be used so long as the material is appropriately cited.
